Hey what’s up guys so the other day I was at the discount hardware store where they were giving away these electronic fly swatters for free with any purchase so of course I took one runs on two double-a batteries you press and hold the button there and then when the fly gets in between there it is instantly killed with the DC charge so anyway.
I thought it’d be a cool video to take this apart and see exactly how they are generating that high voltage over here to kill bugs so let’s take a closer look well you know I guess if they’re selling millions of these things and giving them away for free that the board would be extremely minimal just a handful of parts here to take that battery voltage and step it up to the high voltage out to the grills and everything here is what I would expect so the board is in the handle like this we’ve got the battery holder down here molded into the handle and the wires going out to the metal grates we’ve got the center wire for the grate in the middle and then two white wires connected down to the board for the two outer grills so when the bug flies in.
I have to make contact with both and outer grill and the inner grill that makes sense so looking at the board everything here is pretty much what I would expect we’ve got some magnetics a high voltage capacitor some sort of oscillator on the low voltage side you get the button in the LED and that’s it there’s really not a whole lot to this so when I first traced this out I came up with this and you know at first this was all making sense and i’ve seen this type of transformer before at other power supplies it’s a 6 pin transformer you’ve got 3 3 pins on the low-voltage side and three pins on the high voltage side so I was expecting an arrangement kind of like the.
Where you’ve got the three pins there there’s a center tap and then a center tap on the high voltage side not exactly what I was expecting.
For this type of converter and honestly I was expecting some sort of voltage multiplier kind of circuit something kind of like that but not the case with this so this clearly is not correct because I don’t understand this and I don’t see how when I drew it out I was trying to figure out how could this possibly get into any sort of.
Oscillation here we’re even connecting a 470 ohm resistor here to the high voltage side so where they wasn’t making sense so I actually pulled the.
Transformer off of the board and owned it out to find where the windings were and I was completely wrong.
There there there is not two sets of windings with center taps it’s actually three independent windings like this zoom out a little bit there so it’s actually set up just like this and we’ve got a three separate windings so this makes a little bit more sense it’s a custom transformer nothing i’ve never seen anything like this before so when you look at this at first it may be a little confusing but i’ve seen this arrangement before and maybe you have as well this is a jewel thief type.
Oscillator it’s a little unique and not exactly what I’m used to typically you would see some sort of series resistance in line with the base of the transistor here so maybe that’s actually a flaw in this circuit design I don’t I don’t know maybe or possibly that series resistance is built into this 80 50 s bipolar NPN transistor maybe so who knows but this is the way it’s hooked up and we’ve got the jewel t jewel theives type.

High voltage winding out here and this is a step-up type transformer we do have a much higher resistance across this winding than these these are like 1.5 ohms here both of these exacts they measured exactly the same resistance and then about 230 Ohm’s out here so we’ve got the step-up transformer I’m not sure exactly how this winding is coupled into these.
I think it would be coupled into this winding here because looking at the board we’ve got we’ve got the winding here this one right across here you probably can’t see that but anyway two of the pins here are actually for this winding and then this winding and this winding are symmetrical we’ve got the two pins there for the high voltage and then the two pins for the low voltage so that’s probably where this step-up transformer action is taking place and you know.
I might actually do a separate video where we take a deep dive hook the scope up probe around try to actually figure out how this whole circuit works and maybe even soup it up a little bit okay but anyway on the high voltage side standard rectifier here just a single diode then the high voltage capacitor here with a bleeder resistor so after you’re done using it the high voltage bleeds off into that resistor you know and that’s that’s all there is to it I haven’t actually measured the high voltage this was just a kind of a quick video just to show you the bare-bones circuit how it all kind of works in and maybe we’ll take that deep dive in a future video let me know if that’s something that you would find.

So in this video we turn a regular electric fly swatter into a 17,000 volt fly swatter ouch.
So this is going to be what I call a Frankenstein project it’s not designed to be particularly aesthetically pleasing or well-thought-out it’s designed to get back to the basics and just have a bit of fun with a simple electronics project now we will be playing around with high voltage and I have seen many many people play pranks and zap people with these which admittedly my five-year-old self does find very entertaining but I don’t endorse it and don’t recommend it and when we modify this to even higher voltages I really don’t recommend it as always when we’re dealing with high voltages safety and care should be taken so let’s start pulling this fly swatter apart and also have a look at some of the parts we may need so I’ve bought this high voltage transformer off ebay I tested it in a previous video and it measured approximately seventeen thousand volts if you want to check out that video be a link over in the video’s corner here we’ve also got our electric flyswatter course rather low voltage to say the least not very impressive in 18 650 battery costless puts out 3.7 volts and I’ve got a couple of 18 650 battery clips reason I’ve got two is if I don’t get the desired effect with 118 650 what the heck let’s put a second one on there for giggles so this is going to be a project where it’s kind of ad libbed not exactly sure how everything is going to come together at the end of the video at this point but we’re going to have some fun doing it.
I’ll make sure our swatter is fully discharged by shorting out the context all right so not much in here to be honest.
Spool that out so that is everything that makes this fly swatter to now we’re going to put that aside for the moment because now we have to focus on how we go about installing everything in here I’m hoping that ok we’re going to have to cut some of these tabs out in order to get that cover to fit on the transformer so I will do that and come back when that’s done so I just used a dremel tool to cut away the posts there and now the transformer does indeed fit into the housing when I line it up properly and while I was at it I enlarged the factory switch hole to accept this momentary switch because unfortunately the switch that came with is mounted on the PCB board and we’re not going to be able to use that so that pops in there and now we’ve got a switch again now unfortunately we can’t use two doublea’s as there isn’t enough voltage I have tried this transformer running off three volts and it does absolutely nothing three point seven is the magical number or higher actually so obviously we can’t fit out 18 650 in the factory battery location and we’re going to have to use these clips anyway so I’m going to propose that with the switch installed and hold it and figure out where I can place these on the outside of the handle and in a location which doesn’t interfere with my hand and they looks pretty good so I think it’s time to break out some hot glue.
Now aside from the hot glue I’m going to put a small through small computer screw very small glossed and here it is through the housing as well it’s not really needed but hey it’s there why not so now we can wire this up to our switch I’ll just get my soldering iron out so I’ve just drilled a hole just next the battery mount and fit the wires through and keep them in place with a little bit of hot glue now it’s time to start making connections just going to turn the switch terminals.
Now I’m going to solder the positive wire from our battery clip onto one of the terminals of the switch and the other terminal switch of course to our transformer.
Look small piece of heat shrink here and I’ll slip over the negative wire I’m going to solder the two negative wires together.
And now it’s time for some more hot glue we’re going to solder in our transformer ndele sorry on soldiering I mean hot glue hot glue our switch and transformer now I don’t really think it’s a good idea to use the factory wiring here one wires initially that’s probably insulated the 600 volts and the other is just be a wire so gone around the edge with a small screwdriver pop the two covers apart so we can see the joins and make some new connections here now don’t throw this away it is actually useful we could use that in the future project I got in mind perhaps making a gas lighter or or barbecuing night or something handheld that it has a good spark on it and that could be just the tool for the job so looks like we’re going to have to extend the wires because they’re not going to be long enough from the transformer so I’ll go get some wire now looking at this mesh I think it is Elementium mesh now unless you’ve got some specialized flux and solder you are not going to be solder into LOA so to combat this I’m just stripped about 15 millimetres of wire and I’m going to thread it through one of the loops and then twist it so that it gets a good firm connection or as good as you can without directly soldiering to the alloy and I’m going to apply a bit of solder to the wire so that twist can’t come undone easily.
So now we can install everything back together.
All right so with a bit of argument the bet is back together so now we can hook up our output transformer.
So just heat shrunk and sold those connections so now we’ve got a tricky job of trying to fit this all back inside cool I might have made an oops I didn’t realize the bat actually recesses into where I put this transformer so I have to snap that out and then rhe hot glue it down a bit further into the enclosure learn from my mistakes don’t make them so here’s how we do it properly.
First we installed the bat we place a whole dollop of hot glue down there and then we install the transformer so then nothing is in the way brilliant so I’m going to try and tuck all the wires out of the way for the enclosure to be secured down hopefully a little something like that see if it all comes together Wow the buttons pretty scary if I’m honest I think I’m going to put some hot glue on that.
Now that looks at least 5% better right so while everything is good install some screws.
And just for the sake of aesthetics because clearly we’re going for a finger beauty here install the battery cover again.
So rather nervous that I’m going to get fried to smithereens but let’s install our battery see if it works oh my goodness that’s effective so I went and found a dead flight in the house to simulate what happens when you capture a fly and maliciously hold down the button for too long so here we go well you wouldn’t only get smoke come from you a barbecued fly oh boy that stinks oh heck no I’m out of here.
Screw that and I am NOT cutting that stuff absolutely Riggs don’t maliciously hold down the button for long until your flight is barbecued would be my recommendation unless you want to completely bomb out your house I’ve got to knock out the charcoal butts from the fly lift Oh actually smoke staining on the mesh now so if you enjoyed this rather silly and pointless project but it is admittedly very fun do hit that like button and also while you’re down there if you could subscribe that would be much appreciated I’m sure you’ll find a lot of future videos entertaining so thanks for watching and I’ll see you next one bye for now.
