How to Make a Wooden Spoon?
Today I’m using the Arbortech ball gouge to help me make a few wooden spoons I’m using the ball gowns to hollow out the spoon takes a little bit of getting used to but what you do it’s definitely a time saver and for the materials.
I’m using walnut and so peeling off cuts that have been hanging around the shop with the board’s cut to width at two and a quarter inches the next step is to cut the board to length and I think anywhere between 10 and 13 is a good length for spoon so I’ll make the cut here at 12 and a half the thickness of the wood that I’m using is five quarter and five quarter typically measures about an inch in the sixteenth.
Next I’ll measure and Mark at a quarter of an inch and three and three quarters of an inch and these are reference lines that I want to stay within when I’m using the ball gouge I’m also going to measure three quarters of an inch in from the front of the spoon on each side and cut a 45-degree angle now I’ll throw a line of quarter of an inch from the edge all around and these are reference lines to try not to go beyond those lines.
When I’m using the ball gouge and I’ll also make them mark at the center or close to the center so when I’m using the ball gouge I’m trying to kind of stay like this I’ve got the workpiece clamped down and I’m ready to start using the ball gouge if you’ve never used one of these before.
Definitely get some scrap wood put in a little time practicing the cutting tool can jump or bounce a little bit.
Depending on the density of the wood or the direction of the grain but it’s really easy to control with just a little bit of practice.
When I’m using the tool I’m not putting a lot of pressure on the tool I’m just letting the tool do the work and being careful not to go any further than this pencil line here when I’m near the front of the spoon I want to be careful that the tool doesn’t run and carve out the front also it’s good to know what direction the tool is cutting in this case the tool is spinning like this so it’s cutting down which will avoid tear out near the front of the spoon.
Towards the back of the spoon the cutting tool is spinning in this direction and I’m getting kind of a a choppy cut which could result in tear out so at this point I’m going to turn the workpiece around and start working on this side I continue to rotate the workpiece as I carve the spoon to help maintain control and avoid tear out most of the carving is done I’ve got a little bit of a high spot right here and when I use the ball gouge I’m using very light pressure you can tell that sometimes the the ball gouge wants to run on you and so you’re really not putting pressure on it you just want to get that practice in before you start working on your workpiece well once you get the hang of this it definitely saves time okay that’s pretty good the rest of the work will have to do with sandpaper the next cup will be on the bandsaw and I’ve measured in and marked it three inches and I’m going to just kind of draw a gentle kind of an arc.
Next I’m going to kind of follow that angle.
I’ll measure in just about three quarters of an inch maybe a little heavy on each side and draw a line.
Okay so now we’re starting to look like a spoon and I’m going to stick with the bandsaw for just a little bit longer and just eyeball it cutting away the bulk of the material and getting it ready for its next step at the belt sander I’ve got 60 grit paper in the belt sander I’ve clamped it to my table and I’m ready to do the final shaping and at this point I’m just going for what I think looks good no two spoons have to look exactly alike once I finish with the belt sander I’ll move on to an orbital sander with 80 grit paper and then eventually a palm sander with 120 grit.

How to Carve a Wooden Spoon // Woodworking?
Hi, I’m Anna ball traits and today I’m going to talk to you a little bit about spoon carving before we get started I would love to give a huge shout out to Squarespace for sponsoring this channel and making videos like this possible because I know a lot of people don’t have access to wet or green wood I have prepared a few blanks that are dry and will show you how I’ll carve those but basically it’s all the same thing I’ll start with my blank whatever it is I’ll use either an axe or the bandsaw to rough it out and then I’ll bring it over and use the hand tools to refine the shape further this is a guitar makers vise this is my favorite tool as far as spoon carving goes because it will hold your work however weirdly shaped it is this is the curved gouge and rather than using a hook knife especially if the wood is not super wet this is my.
Favorite tool to use and when I am first establishing the bowl shape I want to cut across the grain so I’m gonna spend a lot of time basically just getting it out here I don’t want to take too much at a time and I’ll use my hand power rather than a mallet and the spoon is actually at this point already gonna start telling me what directions it wants to go if you start noticing pieces of chip out or tear out you’re gonna see okay well it doesn’t want to go that way but right now I’m mostly roughing so I am fine to just power through those spots that are a little bit more tricky this is dry wood carving wet wood is a whole lot more enjoyable but not everyone has access to it know how both of my hands are always behind the chisel at all times.
One of the things that I like most about the guitar makers vise is that it keeps the work very secure so that I can never be putting my hands anywhere that they might be in.
So now after I’ve broken kind of into the spoon Bowl a little bit I can start paying a little bit closer attention to the grain and what it wants to do and move around the piece accordingly so you’re seeing a ton of chip out right here that’s because basically at this point in the wood it wants to be curved this way and then this way and kind of meet in the middle here the best way to tell which direction the wood wants to be carved is that where it changes direction inside the bowl it’s going to want to chip away so a really good indication both with carving spoons or hand-cleaning or anything else is that when you experience tear-out.
It wants to be cut the other direction so here where it’s got a ridge of chip out I know that at that point.
Something’s changed so I want to come back here and see if it’s a little happier being carved this direction however if I were to keep carving just that direction at some point it’s going to want to catch the opposite way right there so I know alright this one wants to be curved this way up to that ridge point from before so I’ll just take a few passes and kind of smooth it down to a nice little depth there and then I’ll come back this way and this is where the real finesse of spoon carving comes in because getting to where you can.
Actually get a nice hand-carved Bowl of your spoon where there’s little or no chip out or even better yet where you can get to the point where you can carve in specific designs into the bowl of your spoon is where you really know that you’ve made it as far as sharpening your tools and figuring out grain direction because I really personally love a nice faceted spoon interior I know that that’s not everyone’s preference so carving out the bowl is pretty easy until you get to this step and this is the most difficult thing basically just because as you’re trying to finish it up you don’t want to make any deep gouges you don’t want to experience any pear out and you want to come back and fix any tear.
That you did have so here I’m just coming and I’m making really really light cuts and when I get to that point I’m gonna change direction when I come back and I’m supporting the tool on the bevel of the tool and just putting very light pressure and just seeing if I can’t come in here and clean it up so again along the top rim.
I’m coming from this side up to that middle point and then I’m coming back and coming from this side up to that middle point and then to get rid of all the tear-out on the bottom I’m coming from the sides and then just meeting again in the middle there and trying not to dig myself into a corner around the one thing about this part is that you’re generally limited by the shape of your tool here.
So I can only use this supporting the bevel as much as the crook of this gouge goes so the one benefit of having multiple tools at this point is I can switch to another tool that will allow me to get into that better my favorite tool for this job is called is a score or a hook knife and so because my friend is borrowing my favorite hook knife right now I’m just gonna use my score and I’m coming along this bottom edge from the sides and seeing if I can’t just get rid of all that tear out and make the inside of the bowl really nice anytime you can use sheer cuts aka moving at an angle.
You’ll be able to get some nicer results there I also want to make sure that I get rid of any high points so with spoon carving it’s always about using small cuts sharp tools and leverage I don’t want to have to force anything anytime because if I do then my tool could easily slip and I could cut myself so I’m doing a lot of holding things differently using my opposite hand to support and push and if I can get rid of all this tear out here then I will be able to leave a knife finish in this which is what I would prefer to do I mean you can use your fingers to feel most this stuff like aside from these two little pieces of tear out this is a really nice even there’s a high point right here so I come back just behind it to where the edge of the knife will catch I’m running the bevel along with it so that acts as a registration point now.
I’m going to use a spokeshave I really like using this tool for wet or dry wood and again you’ve got to pay really close attention to what the grain wants to do with these bandsaw marks we want to get down past them because that’s their gonna lie to you a little bit a spokeshave can be pushed or pulled the thing that I always like to think is that I always want to start high I want to rotate into the cut and then I want to rotate out of the cut.
I think the natural tendency is for people to want to use this tool like an ice-cream scoop but if you do that then you’re going to create Terra at the end of every one of your cuts if this were wet wood I might be more inclined to use a knife to do this part of the shaping process but to be totally honest ever since I took up chair making I absolutely love using the spokeshave so I often will gravitate towards this if I have a vise or a shave horse handy this is the tool that I’m going to want to be using so I’m gonna just keep flipping this around in the vise and shape it with the despo cape remove all those Bend saw lines get a closer look at what’s going on with the grain at this point I wanna shape the back of the bowl.
I’m gonna shape the transition these little transitions are probably the toughest part of spoon carving because the grain direction changes so many times in this little section one really nice thing about as you get more.
Comfortable with your spoon blank preparation is that the carving process goes a whole lot faster if you’ve got a properly prepared blank so if I had to remove all this material with you know a smaller blade like a knife or a.
Spokeshave obviously this would be a lot more time and labor-intensive and so being able to spend that time with an axe or with a bandsaw and really get close to the shape that you want you’re just gonna save yourself a ton of time so the very last thing that we’re gonna do is to do any cleanup that needs to be done and I will do all that with a hook knife and or a straight knife and so here we’ve got a little tear-out when I get that I don’t really love the way that lining the direction that lines going so I’m going to fix it here what I’m doing with my knife right now is called a scissor cut it’s basically I’m holding my knife sturdy up against my body I’m actually controlling the cut with this hand so that allows me to actually get a significant amount of power because that power for the cut is coming from my lats so because this is a piece of hard maple and because it’s dry wood.
I need a significant amount of power for this cut however we’re this wet wood this would actually be a fairly simple cut to make here we’ve got a tiny bit of tear-out here so I’m just going to come back.
And set it that out and similarly with the knife.
I always have my hands in a position that they could never get cut or my body in a position that I could never get cut another cut that I really like to do is here where I’ve got again a lot more power I can have my arm be straight and cut downward by controlling the.
Workpiece I can cut towards myself safely by tucking in my knees mm-hmm there seems to be no sign of intelligent life anywhere it’s using my body as a support and just making it so that there’s only a certain amount of travel like the knife can’t slip here because it only has given the travel that I’ve allowed it to make with my body position you can make some pretty refined cuts this way okay the last thing that needs to happen is any refinements on the bowl here so now I’m actually using this once again as my strength I’m holding the knife in my left hand and I’m using my right hand to push the piece and rotate it all at once.
So after we’re done with the knife at this point we can use any sandpaper or we can use little pieces of scraper or anything these are really easy to make you just cut them out of a piece of old bandsaw blades.
Shape them on a grinder I’m gonna come back and just find out if there’s any rough spots I really couldn’t clean up with the knife and I’ll clean them up really quickly with the card scraper and if I’m wanting to leave a nice tool finish and I finish thing.
I think we’re pretty much good so at this point we can add some finish to the spoon anything food-safe will work mineral oil beeswax and mineral oil there’s actually spoon finishing products you can also purchase but I like to put it on with my hand because obviously if it’s not hand safe it’s certainly not food safe and I like to just see the colors of the wood take shape and deepen as the oil touches them.
I’ll put on an excessive amount to start let it soak in the thirstiest parts are gonna be the end of the spoon to ends where there’s end grain and anywhere that there’s end grain exposed then just wipe away the excess burnish it in a little bit this process also reveals scratches and imperfections that then you can go back and fix or not if you choose sometimes with a rough you know a tool only spoon like this.
