We don’t use a sealer we go right to base you might have issues right in here you might have some wrinkled paint okay so what is sealer so a sealer is pretty much a thinned out primer if you buy a sealer primer there are two different ways to mix it to make it a primer or to make it a sealer what you have to do is you have to go into the technical data sheets and see if the primer you have can be mixed as a sealer or you have to purchase a sealer separately now your next question is going to be doing I need to purchase an extra sealer gun now if you are a professional it’s a good idea to have a sealer gun so you’re not mixing base and clear although you can use a gun all the way through for sealer base and clear if you’re on a budget I would suggest you have a different one for primer as a professional it’s always good to have one now this one is sent out by Iwata it is their w400.
And this is used as a sealer gun so let’s go ahead and take a look now you can’t go wrong with eye water products just in my opinion they atomize very well and leave a beautiful finish and it’s so important to have a beautiful finish as your sealer coat because everything that lays on top of this finish is only going to show through through the sealer now in the kit what you get is a beautiful little regulator from iwata really nice and then you’ll get your tool for taking it apart uh the gun lube which I love that iwata stands with their guns and here you have it this is their w-400 steeler gun now with the sealer gun I recommend a 1.4 that is what I like for a sealer it will do the overall job okay so that’s his air cap right there and we’re taking a look at it all this this gun pretty much looks like the lph or similar to most of the guns that we’re uh familiar with from the iwata it’s a very light lightweight gun so we’re gonna go ahead and show you the sealer before we do that let’s go ahead and let’s clean that car off clean this is a wax and grease remover this is going to remove any of the solvents now he’ll just spray it using a basic pump sprayer and he’ll just go ahead and what this is going to do is remove all contaminants now you want to allow the car to flash for a good maybe 10 minutes once.
This is done make sure everything is completely off anything that might be in the crevices can completely go ahead and the dry car’s all ready to go now pedro does not prefer to use a tack rag, uh you’d prefer just to go ahead and clean it off with the wax and grease remover and that’s it I just I clean it up I use my hand I blow it out a little bit that’s it all right that sounds good so we’re ready to go ahead and let’s start spraying that sealer so we’re ready to see also now this is a pps cup this is pps 2.0 and it has the lid on here that actually fits the adapter on this okay so they’re kind of snug up together now to set this up what I’ll do is I’ll back out this fluid control I’ll hold in my trigger I’ll turn this until I cannot turn it any more okay I got resistance right here that means that the gun is set to open set to wide open I’ll go ahead and I’ll turn it about one turn in and on the fan here.
I’m gonna back this all the way out okay now why does traditionally have um large fans so on this I’ll go in about maybe a quarter of a turn and then my pressure I mean it really depends I can be around 22 to 23 psi pressure are all going to be different on every single air system so to give me give you guys a magic number it’s just not the case all right you have to watch what the droplets are doing so this simply just comes off I’ll come here and I’ll snug it on okay make sure this is tight and I’m good to go I’ll go ahead and add on my fitting and ready to spray so where do we start when we start painting well we have to analyze our paint booth now in this prep booth.
We have air coming up from up top it’s moving across the car and it’s exciting on the rear of the car so we need to paint in that similar manner we paint in the way that the airflow is traveling so we’re going to start at the front of the vehicle and then we’re going to move all the way across now what is this going to do it’s going to ensure that we have a nice clean wet surface if we were to do it reversed then all the overspray would be carried over the car it would land on fresh sealer now how many coats of sealer do we need well we’re going with a dark sealer and a high-quality sealer so with one coat we should be fine we’re going to be around 75 to 80 percent overlap now it’s very important when your sealer goes down it goes down smooth this is your first coat that needs to be as smooth as it can in order for all the paint to lay on it if you don’t have a smooth sealer.
Coat well you can forget about having a beautiful clear coat finish pedro and I are going to go ahead and knock this out so so so so so it’s been about 10 minutes since our sealer was sprayed now we can see in some areas it’s still kind of drying this is what we call flashing now once it’s all matte then we know that it’s good to go and we want to allow it to give it about good 30 minutes before base coat but do you see how the sealer has tied up all those loose engine edges how it’s made it nice and beautiful what we call in the paint world a good substrate for our base coat to lie on let’s give this a good 20 more minutes and then we’re ready to spray base let’s show you how we mix up that paint so when it comes to mixing paint this specific paint mixes two to one all paints are different so check your technical data sheets this has been pre-mixed by a jobber so you can try to locate a paint store that sells paint they’ll mix it up to your paint coat and they have all the different toners that will come in that paint according to how the manufacturer made this paint now the next thing.
You’ll get mixed up is with a reducer now it’s very important always to use a slow reducer in this case it’s an extra slow and pedro recommends even on dark colors we use a slower reducer now to mix it up we’ll locate two to one now it has all these numbers here so we’re going to maximize the cup and we’re going to go up to the highest number which is number eight on for our paint and then the next number the next eight will be for our reducer let’s show that to you right now so you can see how he brought it up to number eight so the next one will come up to the next number eight which will be our reducer and the next one right there the number eight now if you go over a little bit it’s okay it’s not gonna harm the paint so we are good to go here we’ll give it a mix and this is ready to go right on to the car now so we’re ready for base now we’re using the tecna pro.
Light with our luma 3 aurora light so we can see what we’re doing now, in the same manner, we’ll use the PPS adapter so let’s go ahead in the booth and let’s start spraying base so we’re ready for our base coat now when we do our base coat we’re going to spray it in the same manner that we sprayed our sealer when we follow with our clear it’ll be the same exact manner as well starting from the front of the vehicle and moving towards the back now how many coats do we need that’s to be determined but most likely we can cover this up in two good coats.
Now, where do you get that dryness or dullness in your clear coat a lot of it comes from the coats underneath if this base coat does not lay smooth my clear coat will not lay smooth if I don’t choose the right reducer that’s going to give me an issue as well that’s why we go with the extra slow watch our pattern we’re going to be around 70 to 80 percent once more making sure that that paint lays on smooth to the touch our sealer is nice and smooth and our base coat will follow pedro and I am going to split the labor let’s go ahead and start facing so as we look at the front of the car it is what we call flashing that means it’s gold and it’s dry now the rear of the car was just sprayed its first coat of base coat and it was supplied medium wet now on camera it looks very glossy as it should when you’re spraying because what this will do is flatten out nice and smooth the wetter it looks when you spray the base the smoother it will dry and leave a nicer.
Finish so what we’ll do is we’ll speed things up now and we’ll hit up the second coat and this should be the final coat so two coats of base coat have been put down on the car now it’s because of our sealer that we were able to achieve only two coats let’s say we didn’t seal well this dark dark blue metallic would have a tough tough time covering over those gray primer spots so when you cover it up with sealer it’s going to allow your base to have a nice even coverage and you can save a lot of money when it comes to base coat now when it comes to base coat we used about a half a gallon here and when we reduce it we get about three quarters of the gallon with some left over so that’s a good reference for you guys about how much paint you need and keep in mind if you don’t seal you’re going to need some more base coat so another common question you’ll have is do I need to sand my base coat now if you’re painting in a facility that doesn’t have good airflow well you’re probably gonna get some dirt in that paint job now my suggestion to you is to put.
A couple of coats of the base on the sand with a maybe uh 600 to 800 grit depending on the color and then you can throw another coat of base on there that’s gonna make sure it’s nice and smooth now if you have anything you need a d nib that’s really small I would recommend one of these k grid uh hand pads now this is a k 600 you can also do a k800 and what that will do is you can come to the surface you can nib it out nice and easy and this takes the pressure of your fingertips and it disperses it nice and even so you don’t have to have any of those heavy heart scratches that’s just another quick tip to help you get a nice smooth paint job if you have any dirt or defects along the way now two coats have been applied here and what we’ll do is we’ll let it flash for another 10 minutes.
And we’ll take a look around and see if it needs any further coats now you might be asking brian do I need an effect coat do I need a drop coat now this is the same terminology for going ahead and lowering your pressure and spraying from about an increased distance of five to six inches more and what this does is it helps on a silver or light metallic to orientate those metallics to make it nice and even on this particular color it does not need it so we’ll go ahead and we’ll inspect it and once it’s good we’ll go ahead and follow into the clear coat stage now the main areas you’re going to want to inspect are your lower portions in between your crevices and your underside.
To make sure that everything is completely covered in this case it looks like it’s good to go so we’ll go ahead and mix up that clear coat now when it comes to clear coat we’re ready to spray we’re going to be using port 15’s american icon 2-1 premium high solids clear coat now when you’re asking how to mix it up all you need to do is look at the technical data sheets on this particular clear it gives you the directions on the side it says it does in fact mix up two to one that would mean for every two parts of clear coat you’re going to add one part of activator now in this particular situation I always tell you guys to use slow this is going to allow the clear to stay open and lay down smoother and colder temperatures you can move to a more medium or fast depending on how cold it is so this says that we should allow it to flash for about 10 to 15 minutes in between coats and that is just what we’ll do let’s go ahead and get this mixed up so if you made these far congratulations.
Now here comes the fun part the clear coat stage now if you have one gun for this that’s fine you can use your gun as I said earlier for sealer base and clear I do recommend a different gun for your primer you don’t want to mix all that together now when we go to clear coat the most important thing we must have in a clear coat gun is good atomization now your gun spleed and pressure will play into that as well now if you’re looking for a secret pressure number I can’t give you that you need to look at the droplets and see what they’re doing if those droplets are too big you need to bump that pressure up a little bit finer droplets will yield smoother results you might need to turn in that fluid just the hair to get a little bit less fluid going on a panel so that the air can atomize that fluid if you got too much fluid coming out and not enough air the air is gonna struggle to break it into fine droplets you’ll get bigger droplets so I’m gonna have pedro put down two coats now when.
He puts down these two coats he’s gonna put down the first one very nice but not super glossy he’s going to get the paint on the panel we’re not worried about a little bit of orange peel texture we can clear that up in the second coat now following that same process we’ll move from the front of the car to the back now it’s very important to identify what kind of spray environment you’re in because that’s going to play a role in how that air travels over the panel now we’ll allow 10 to 15 minutes in between coats and what that’s doing in between coats is it’s allowing those solvents to release if we trap them with a second coat too soon or use a fast hardener they’re going to skin over the surface and you’re going to have little pop marks known as solvent pop so allow your clear to really breathe give it the time it needs these are chemicals we’re working with pedro’s about to step into the booth with the clear heat just mixed follow the subtitles from some great.
Information to learn some more here we go so that first coat of clear is on now we want to show you what the first coat of clear should look like now we take a look at here it’s a little bit dry okay we’re not concerned with it being dry let it be dry we’d rather it be a little dry on the first coat then for it to run on the first coat this first coat is like glue we want it to tack up when that second coat goes down this glue is going to make that second coat stick so we can lay it on harder slower and that way we can get a more beautiful shine a rich shine if we try to do this on our first coat we would have clear running down the panel so take it easy on the first do not feel discouraged if it does not come out good I mean guys check it out in some areas it’s just a little bit dry okay you might have little bumps in it and this is even in a professional environment so allow us to drive 10 to 15 minutes flash time pedro is going to hit up the second coat a little bit um wetter okay and we’ll allow it to flow out this clear is looking really really good so let pedro do his thing all right so pedro’s.
Gonna start the unmasking now we allowed this to dry for a good 30 minutes when we baked it we baked it around 150 degrees and this clear really dries up pretty quick now if you don’t have a baking booth that’s not a big deal just let this air dry keep the fans on that’s going to allow the solvents to come out of the paint instead of just settling there now a big common question is when can we unmask the actual tape now some people prefer to do it when the paint is still wet I would only do that if you have areas bridging so for instance on a molding right if you have molding and the paint is very close then you can pull it but since now it’s dry Pedro.
And I am going to go ahead and unmask it we’ll pull it outside and we’ll check it out well I’ve got to say the end result looks really really good now we went ahead and we did this project and we didn’t disassemble anything because we wanted to make sure we had a project that you could do you’re not scared to attempt by taking every little thing apart and you can see what the result looks great with the help of scorpion paint, hey I really like the way it came out I think it came out really really good thank you know I was telling the viewers that this is a job that they can do at home they don’t have to feel scared about taking every little thing apart of course when we’re in the shop setting we have a warranty, uh we go ahead and remove everything.
