Hey guys welcome back to the not only carrots cooking show I’m Lia and today I’ll be showing you four different ways to slice your homemade bread let’s get started sometimes I ‘find it just infuriating trying to figure out how to cut my bread and I ‘have found over the years a few little tips and tricks so the first one is don’t slice hot bread this is cold bread I ‘made this bread the other day popped it in the freezer once it had cooled down and now it’ll slice beautifully hot bread straight out of the oven is going to be flippy-floppy fully a party you know they’re not really words but you know what I ‘mean it doesn’t really work half as well as cold bread so number one.

I ‘definitely recommend that you use cold bread when you’re slicing but the temperature of your bread aside I ‘wanted to show you four different ways to slice bread and particularly how to get even slices I ‘for a number of years used a hand slicer a bread knife and I ‘wanted to show you how to use a bread knife alright so you pretty much have to decide how thick you do or don’t want your slices to be we tend to go medium because we like to have sandwiches made out of the bread as well so you aim when you’re doing slicing with a bread knife is you want to make sure you’re slicing the same width on the front as back otherwise.

You’ll end up with sort of this triangular shape and it’s just a bit weird so I ‘don’t know how I’m doing I’ll see in a minute I ‘tended push it forward with my finger make sure it’s even and then go ahead I ‘tilt the knife down a little bit away from myself and I ‘think I’m doing all right so they’re relatively even though as you can see this one’s a little skinnier and this one’s a little bigger and you tend to find that that’s what happens.

When you use a bread knife but I ‘have another little contraption that I ‘actually have never used before I ‘thought we’d give it a go on the show today a special bread slicer Misra I ‘don’t actually know the name of this is actually no name on the box so anyway let’s give it a try and see if it helps to make our slices any easier right oh here it is as I ‘said true to my word not a single word on this box so when you run Amazon or wherever you’re buying you ebay just type in bread slicer jubilee lucky and why not you’ll get this all right I’ve never even seen this before.

So you are I ‘don’t know just opens out like this from the pictures which are all there is on the box I’m guessing that I ‘put my bread in like this and on the side you can see there are actually holes these are all holes and there they have twin holes on the other side so I’m going to shove my bread knife in there and see how we go I ‘don’t really know how thick.

It’s gonna make it wow that’s really thick bread alright so this is for a thickly sliced post oh that didn’t really work oh okay yes I ‘I had been slicing unevenly so it’s not the bread slices problem it’s my problem alright let’s try again oh my bread slicing no it’s a bit thick alright instead of having to hold the back and the front at the same time yeah awkward that’s me oh there you go still a little bit funny I ‘think it’s probably still my fault but it’s a little bit weird I’ve never done this before it’s pretty thick we’ll try one more time it’s just.

I’ll be grippy I ‘don’t really know how to hold my bread still he always hold it like that here we go okay that one felt better I ‘think I’m getting the hang of it there we are that’s more even I ‘like that so this I ‘would recommend this slicer is if you want to have the thick cafe toast with you you know Kairo or herb tea in the morning so I’d recommend this for thick pieces of choice if you’re having a monster sandwich man you would that’s a lot of bread I ‘don’t know you might find a bit much I’ll try one more time and then.

I’m to show you another way slice of bread so what’s getting easier as I’m doing it but it is a strange feeling in there yep that one sliced really well as well so we’re talking about consistency guys this definitely gets a consistently thick slice and along the edges there are others like I ‘don’t know why you would ever want yeah what kind of here I ‘will show you how thick it can go I ‘don’t know who would run a piece of toast this thick but hey maybe you just lack thick just so but the only other like pizza dough is you can even don’t really think.

One or yeah different slices within that monster alright alright let’s leave that one now we’re going to my next slice ax and electric knife okay electric knives are always something that I ‘associated with Christmas dinner or roast lamb and as a vegan I ‘don’t roast lambs and yeah so it’s not really my thing but my husband a few years back had to cut some foam to go into a suitcase to hold a drone and anyway big story long story short anyway the recommendation, if you didn’t have a proper foam cutter, was to buy an electric knife.

And it worked really well and we don’t like throwing things away if we have to buy out we want to figure out another way to use it and so for a while, I ‘ended up using an electric knife with my bread I ‘found initially I ‘thought it was a bit posh electric knife you do but it actually works surprisingly well and you know kind of powerful using its good fun they are sharp don’t be silly obviously I’ll show you with this I ‘slice up Jubilee.

Lucky since it has no name on the box and then I’ll show you about a free hand as well so I ‘don’t know if it’s kind of fix this is really thick it doesn’t fit so I ‘can’t use that sorry bed saucer alright it has these little knobs here that the holes a double knife together so anyway all you do is you are just going to gently put your knife on top of your bread push the green button and then it doesn’t even need you don’t even have to slice you just hold it and just gently go and it will just fall down so now it sounds like you’re counting down a tree.

But it gets a really nice piece of toast or bread to go into the toaster to become toast let’s try again see if I ‘can be more consistent I ‘guess so yes a little bit thick on the bottom but it’s a really fast way to do the loaf of bread so I’m gonna do this lap the last bit of this loaf as quickly as I ‘can carefully and just to show you the speed okay so pretty good job at being consistent until this little the wafer-thin one at the end but until then not too bad so you can get the hang of it guys once again though they’re a little thick I ‘would find that too thick for toast it’s not quite as thick as this one Your Honor winner and in Australia these retail for around 20 bucks.

So yeah they’re quite cheap so anyway that might be a fun thing you know you’ve got to buy a present for somebody who’s got everything Hey buy them an electric knife for their bread making all right that life’s done you better get on to a final bread slicing appliance and here it is the electric bread slicer not to be confused with the manual bread slicer or the electric knife slicer this is my favorite this is one of those machines that I ‘put off buying for years because they are expensive you know I ‘think it was over $100 to buy this machine.

Maybe even 200 I ‘can’t remember but it was expensive compared to buying a $20.00 bread knife or you know a $20.00 electric knife but you can get perfect slices every single time and it is so easy to use my 11-year-old is my official bread slicer girl you can see some of her videos here I’ll put a little card up there it is really easy to use it has a safety switch so you had a little baby and they’re mucking around and they’re pushing the buttons but they shouldn’t be anywhere near this machine.

But they can’t start it there’s no way to start this machine it usually and but you have to actually push down the on a button and the safety button at the same time otherwise you can’t get your blade to rotate for those of you who are curious to know if this has any other applications if you are making your own gluten steaks and things like that and you want to make a big roll of it to make your own vegan luncheon meat you can slice things like your vegan meats and this as well and so it’s not limited to only your bread all right so I ‘like my bread crazy sick.

As I’ve mentioned earlier so for me with this particular brand I ‘put on 16 and a half I ‘don’t know what that specifically means whether it’s millimeters or what but it is a size that suits us this little contraption is for when you get to the end of your life and you’re pushing it into this other show anyway alright this catches the crumbs anything else I ‘need to say no I ‘think we’re good so you have to push safety switch forward and then one with your button hold your bread still don’t slice your fingers and push gently forward with this little moving tray right let’s do it make sure after you’ve done each slice that you push your life back in again.

So it’s flat against this slicing wall and then when you’re your safety switch on and push down and then move forward don’t rush it because you can tear your bread especially if you’re doing it fresh you have to be really really gentle with your bread and as I ‘said before I ‘don’t recommend slicing hot bread it’s a bit of a disaster so here we go again and just have a look look at this but the precise it’s perfect it’ll look like a store-bought Wellman I’m finished I’ll show you okay as you can see I ‘now can fit almost not quite I ‘can almost fit my contraption on the end all right you can have to move out the way okay so all this does is it hooks on to the end.

It actually has a little harrier in there that hooks on and you can push your bread into the wall and not a risk you know slicing your little fingers off now I’m going to show you what happens when you get near to the end watchword keep watching it’s gonna make a liar out of me usually my bread fell over okay usually what happens when you get down to it this much of your life left is it starts to spin around and around and around the playhead like that and it just doesn’t want to slice because you can’t get enough of a grip on this little.

Tiny back a bit because it’s only gripping whatever the spikes are touching and for that, it’s only a little tiny section here so what I ‘do is usually when it spins around on the blade I ‘flip it around and you want to face the back end of the rear part of your sliced bread well not unsliced bread the loof face that bit towards your blade side and then slice it so that you have all of these little spiky bits pushing into it two scripts better.

That’s why I ‘can’t really say what anyway so push it in backward and then it won’t spin around because usually does even though this time it didn’t now one thing you may find is it didn’t quite happen this time but sometimes your very last piece is a bit bigger then you want it to be but not small enough to be sliced into say three pieces so I ‘tend to find the last one I ‘either choose to just accept that it’s going to be fatter than the rest but my kids love it super skinny bread because when you toast it goes really crispy so I ‘just look at the bread and work out roughly would it behalf and just move the little dial on the side to get your sizing and then I ‘just make it super skinny red for the last peace.

And so they end up with these fun little super skinny bits that they really enjoy so as you can see guys I ‘to that loaf so much faster than like it can turn your loaf from three minutes down to thirty seconds and I ‘tend to cook three loaves at once and it just saves a lot of time yes it’s chunky it takes up a bit of space in the cupboard or on a shelf but this will last for years and years and years I ‘love the fact that my kids are now old enough to be able to do it as well to slice on their own I ‘cook three loaves at once and so for me.

I ‘just want to get in getting them sliced done in a packet back in the freezer and I’m finished and I ‘like the fact that they are all shaped they’re all you know the same size and it means that when you eating a sandwich you’re not having this tiny little bit there’s really big fat bit and you know so it’s just all-around better to make sure though you’re not going to put this into the sink and cover it with water I ‘would think that are pretty obvious but it is electrical so don’t put water on this machine if you do use it to slice things like your gluten loaf.

Or whatever to make your vegan meats just use a little tiny bit of soapy water on a cloth and only clean the blade where the blade is messy and then dry it off with a cloth when you’re doing bread if you don’t need any water at all and I ‘usually use a dry tea towel just to get into the cracks and get out all of the little bits of crumbs and things and so it’s very easy to clean it up which is great so guys I ‘hope you enjoyed today’s video.

How to make DIY Bread Slicers?

Hey everybody ron here and welcome to the Roy family homestead and today let’s build something well everybody uh as you know if you’ve seen some of our other videos, uh we’ve started making homemade bread um one of the problems that we’re running into with the homemade bread is trying to get even nice slices so it’s not real thick on one end real thin on the other by the time you get halfway through the loaf it’s shaped like this so um I ‘looked around at the electric slicers the little manual slicers I ‘guess it’s got little slots in it they’ve got the bamboo.

One which is really pretty it’s really fancy looking but it’s 87 and I’ve said this a bunch of times as you all know I ‘don’t throw anything away so when I ‘was building a deep hive box for our bees I ‘had an extra piece of wood leftover so I’m gonna I ‘looked around like I ‘said and kept looking at the different uh designs and everything I ‘though you know what I’m gonna try building one I ‘mean this is gonna cost me a couple of nails.

The wood was is strapped basically is what I ‘had leftover, uh so this is virtually going to be free a little bit of wood glue and some mineral oil to put on it you know to seal all the wood in and everything and that’ll be it guys so let’s get started uh basically I’ve kind of come up with my own measurements and everything got everything wrote down basically the bottom of the board is going to be 10 inches by 5 and 3 4 inches that’ll be the base the back part that’s gonna you know is, of course, gonna be on the back, uh I’m gonna make it uh seven and three-sixteenths by five inches it’s gonna be a little bit shorter than the overall height of the bread slicer.

So that you can put your hand there you know and push the bread back if you need to the sides are going to be uh 10 inches wide so a whole loaf of bread will fit in there and six inches tall so if uh like one of my uh other videos I ‘made some white sandwich bread I ‘don’t know if I ‘proofed it too long or what happened but when it baked it was this thick so it was too tall to go in the uh the prototype bread slicer that I ‘had built before and the slots on this thing are 9 16 of an inch thick basically what I ‘did is I ‘actually took a piece of bread.

And I ‘measured it to see how thick the slices were so I’m going to cut my slots at 9 16 of an inch on my table saw here now one thing about with the table saw or if you know anything about the saw blades when it cuts it’s going to cut more to the top part of the cut or I’m sorry it’s going to cut less to the top part and more is going to cut underneath so I’m going to and normally you would only raise your blade just a little bit maybe 20 percent taller than the thickness of your wood so it’ll cut smooth and won’t create as much sawdust and all that good stuff but in this case.

Because I ‘want that when it that final cut or down at the bottom of that cut I ‘want it as close to the same in the front and the back so that it doesn’t weaken the wood so I’m going to raise that blade up as high as it’ll go so that I ‘can you know get more of a straight cut so anyway I’ve already pre-marked my uh my bottom piece and we’re gonna get cutting on it all right everybody I’ve already got my um table saw set at five and three quarter we’ll go ahead and make our first cut guys remember safety first now we’re ready all right let’s see we got here five and three quarters on the dot.

And then our next cut’s gonna be ten inches this is a one by twelve pieces of pine and uh so let’s set this on 10 inches here all right and my legs are crooked on this thing there we go that’s better all right so let’s make our cut check that measurement here real quick 10 inches on the dot all right guys I’m going to go ahead and get these other pieces cut to the dimensions they need to be and then I’m going to come back here and show you uh how we’re cutting those uh 9 16 inch slots all right everybody I’ve got my uh pieces cut now I ‘did uh add a 45 degree.

Angle this is the side and then the slots are going to go right in here on both sides so I ‘just did a little decorative cut that way you can kind of handle the bread a little bit better also but anyway um so now what we’re going to do is we’re going to cut these slots in here I’m going to take them down to the thickness of the wood which is it’s going to set like this so I’m going to take it just slightly past you know the thickness here so it’ll be clear so we’ll have a smooth surface when we’re cutting um now I ‘did build a prototype um I ‘did a video on it.

But I ‘didn’t post it and I ‘kind of learned the hard way when cutting these you don’t want to start with your first cut closest and then work your way out because what happens is as you cut these slots you’re basically adding relief and then when you’re trying to push this up against here to line it up it starts doing like an accordion effect everything it all wants to kind of squish in so your cuts start getting crooked so you want to start out at your furthest cut and then work your way to towards the back that way you’ve got a good solid piece of wood to cut as you’re going and basically all I ‘did is I ‘started out at 9 16 I ‘kept adding 9 16 until.

I ‘got to seven cuts that’s how wide this board is going to allow me to do is do seven cuts of bread which are kind of an odd number but you know that’s what I’ve got so anyway I’m gonna go ahead and get this set up um maybe cut the first one for you and show you, uh so here we go so the first cut is gonna be at 3 and 15 16. So we’re gonna set this right on three and 15 16. And I’m going to cut this one then I’m going to cut this one that way I’m not readjusting and so that the slots will be nice and you know parallel with each other here we go can’t do it without turning the power on no it’s bad.

The thing about working uh my shop is such a mess I ‘can’t get all these tools in here and try to work at the same time so it’s a nice breezy day I’m in the shade so we’re good so here we go, guys, it’s going to get loud and I ‘will mute this part in the video all right guys there’s our first cut uh basically you do this times two and I ‘want you to see this see how this moves if you try if you started cutting over here and moving it in by the time you got into here it’d be like an accordion so uh now as you can see it’s cut to the end here how well you can see that let’s see.

How far it came down here but I ‘still I’ve got the blade high enough that I ‘think that’s left enough wood to uh keep it nice and secure so I’m gonna go ahead and get these slots finished cutting and then I’ll get back with you all right everybody I’ve got uh got my slots cut in my wood I’ll show you here and see there’s there are the slots should work perfectly I ‘know the prototype that I ‘did it worked you know really well so all right so we’re going to go ahead.

And get this thing put together and what I’m going to do is I’m going to use um and let me show you real quick exactly what it kind of what it looks like basically, the piece will go here this is the back piece you know I’m gonna do you know I’m gonna round off the edges and all that stuff and make it look real pretty but see there it is that’s uh that’s my bread slicer uh like I ‘said I’m gonna use um some staples with my air nailer a little bit of wood glue when I ‘get it done get it all sanded down I’ll get back with you guys well all right everybody.

Uh, here it is this is our for my daily bread slicer turned out pretty good but it seems like everything I ‘build I ‘have a little um I ‘don’t know what he called it a little uh character added to my bills I ‘did put a little nick in the top of one of the um slots here but for the most part I ‘think it turned out really good I’m gonna get a little bit closer here so you can see now basically that’s it uh you line your blade up you put your bread in here push it up against the backline your blade up and then just cut it now I ‘can get um one two three four five six seven slices out of this I ‘could have gone ahead and got eight so it’d be an even number.

But you know it looks good like this uh these top pieces are good and sturdy I ‘got everything nailed and glued in place I’m gonna put a little bit of mineral oil on this, uh to seal the wood in real good but I ‘do want to go in and actually do a test cut so let’s go inside do a couple of test cuts I ‘don’t think we have any white bread left we’ve eaten it all up but my wonderful wife miss penny has made some zucchini bread so I ‘thin.

We’ll go in there and slice a couple of pieces of that all right everybody um like I ‘said before we’re out of the sandwich bread but miss penny made some awesome zucchini bread so we’re gonna cut it so basically this is all you do you just slide it in here butt it up against the end take your knife in there and then just slice and it’s lunchtime so you know what I’m having for lunch but look at that look how pretty that slice is that’s the perfect sandwich thickness and then like I ‘said you can either do one slice at a time or push it up there.

This video clip explains how to change the blades in an Oliver model seven-11 countertop bread slicer there are three video files this first video explains how to remove the blade frames the second how to replace the blades and the third how to install the frames into the slicer warning unplug the slicer before changing the blades are extremely sharp always handled with care the tools required to change the blades are a slotted screwdriver needle-nose pliers a 9/16 inch wrench.

And the Oliver quick blade changing tool remove the tap guard by removing six slotted screws this guard fits into the infeed table and may require some force to dislodge it remove the front guard by removing six slotted screws now that the blade frames are exposed the top blade frame can be removed first turn the motor and belt until the top blade frame and rocker mechanism is closest to the motor using the pliers remove the clip from the eccentric pin do not loosen or remove the eccentric pin slide the white plastic link toward the mounting plate until it is off the blade frame pin use the 9/16 inch wrench to remove the bolts and the feet of the blade frame.

Remove the blade frame and set aside be careful as the blades are extremely sharp only the top frame needs to be removed this video explains how to replace the blades in an Oliver blade frame warning the blades are extremely sharp always handle with care’ the blades will be removed one at a time and replaced with a new blade remove each old blade from the removed frame using the Oliver quick blade changing tool this tool has a large opening on one end which is for removing blades place this large end of the tool over the blade tensioning pin and pry forward the blade should fall off of the pin removes the new blades from the clear.

Tube again be careful as the blades are extremely sharp place a new blade on the empty spring-loaded pin of the removed blade frame with the sharp side up similar to the rest of the dull blades place the smaller end of the quick blade changing tool over the pin and blade apply force on the tool against the spring until the other end of the blade lines up with the stationary pin place the blade on the stationary pin make sure it rests flat against.

The stationary pin install all the blades in this manner removing and replacing each one one at a time you gently tap each blade to ensure that they are all securely installed next to the blades in the bottom frame that is in the machine can be changed it is not necessary to remove the bottom frame from the slicer remove old blades and install new blades.

One at a time with the sharp side down be careful to gently slide each blade into the correct slot on the hold down as it is installed once all of the new blades are installed gently tap each blade with the blade changing tool this will ensure that they are securely installed this video explains how to replace the blade frame and guards on the Oliver model seven-11 countertop bread slicer before placing the removed blade frame back into the machine make sure.

That the rocker mechanism is still closest to the motor by turning the motor and belt until it is in this position carefully replace the removed blade frame back into the machine by carefully guiding the blades through the hold down with the front of the blade frame nearest you down into the machine first and then lining up the feet of the blade frame.

On the colors install the bolts and split washers through the blade frame feet do not tighten slide the white plastic link onto the blade frame pin attach the clip check the spacing between blades to make sure it is evenly spaced and does not rub against the hold-down before tightening the bolts adjust the top blade frame as necessary until the spacing is even and there is no rubbing you may have to tap on the blade frame feet for proper alignment tighten.

The bolts on the blade frame feet with the 9/16 inch wrench manually turn the motor and belt through one complete revolution to check for smooth operation replace the guards and screws you congratulations you have successfully changed the blades on your Oliver seven-11 countertop bread slicer.
